Death is
often associated with the word: fear. We fear death. Many of us have the fear
of dying. Or let me put it more correctly; many of us have the fear of dying
young. Many young people are often scared of their candles dying out while the
fire still burns in them. A person hence, restricts the number of activities they
do, in the fear of dying. For example; a person is cautious when traveling by transport,
one does not jump off an airplane without a parachute, people exercise and take
vitamins regularly, people put on seat belts, bikers put on helmets, and many
more. We do such activities to not die. But why do we fear something so much
which is inevitable? Death is a part of life and life is a part of death. Death
is the end of life and life is the postponement of death. We cannot escape it.
We cannot undo it. We cannot repair damage and come alive like in video games.
This is a journey of course. A
journey towards the end. A journey where after you reach people will soon enough
forget you. They will keep you in their thoughts and will think about you for a
second and get on with their lives. Such is the destination of death and we get
there in a hurry. We often miss the journey, and cannot grasp the essence of
the travel, but before you realize it you are at the gate of death.
But what after death? Another life?
Singing hymns in heaven? Or getting deep-fried in hell? We don’t know. We have
to die and see. The famous Thomas Alva Edison, also known as the father of
inventions, emerged from a coma on his death bed and said “it is very beautiful
over there,”
Keanu Reeves, the actor was asked by Stephen Colbert on the
talk show “What happens after we die?” to that he replied, “I know that the
ones who love us will miss us,”
People have their own perceptions towards death and after-life. The word itself is mysterious. Literary figures and poets love to use
death in their works. So does George RR Martin. Before ending, let me put out a
couple of my favorite quotes on death, I don’t know who said them but I only
remember the quotes. If anybody knows the source, feel free to comment, I will
update them.
“We live only once,”
“No, we die once but we live every day,”
“If you realize how quickly people forget the dead, you’d stop impressing so many people.”
