What do you respect? Character or power?

We live in a world where everything is changing. At the tip of the finger, this modern world hangs weakly. With time, our thoughts, inventions, power, technology have come a long way. What has also come a long way is a way we respect other people. These days having power is enough to make people lick your hand. These days being rich is enough to claim yourself as 'perfect' or 'good'. This is obviously a downhill journey.

We have abruptly stopped to value the personality, traits, and behaviors of a person. We value the materialistic qualities of a person rather than the inner qualities. The meaning of good has changed over time. If you are rich, if you hold power, if you have the authority to boss people around, regardless of your character you can carry a tag of 'successful' or 'good' or 'inspirational'. And we are taught to be the same. We are taught to hold power and not to be nice to others. We are taught to be rich, not to help the poor. We are taught to boss people around, but not taught to be nice to them. The definition of 'good' has rotted. To me, it seems we have evolved the other way around.

'Earn money, earn money,' that is all people say. "Be good, be good," no school teaches that. We have eaten up our moral values. We value materialistic stuff and not the real aspects of life. This is why teenagers are depressed and have anxiety. They are drowned under the pressure to be 'good' as in earn as much money as you can. Being good as a human has no value these days. If you are too good to people, they will step over you, they will take advantage of you, use you. It is as if, being good is a weakness. If you don't care and have a heart of stone, people gravitate towards you. But being good invites hate. People don't like you because you are too nice.

It is because the definition of the word 'good' has changed. It doesn't mean possessing moral values or nice behavior, it means to earn that damn money, exercise authority, and have a shitty attitude, nobody cares because you are in power. Nobody dares told Hitler that he has a bad attitude, nobody dares tell Trump to just accept the defeat and move on. People respect power, not the person. Everybody respects you if you hold a position, but if you lose it, they will step over you the next day. So don't take it seriously. So, what do you respect? Character or power?

If you want my advice, be so good a person that even after decades of losing your position, let people remember you as a good person and not as an exposition holder. This is what we should strive for. But hey who wants advice to be good? Everybody wants advice to be rich.
